Nature is the OG
I was standing at a window watching a sunset a few days ago and the colors shifted from orange to pink to a deep purple in a way that no painter has ever quite captured and I thought about how every artist who has ever tried to paint a sunset has failed in some small way because the real thing has something that pigment on canvas cannot hold and the same is true for every form of human creativity because the greatest paintings and the greatest music and the greatest poetry are all attempts to recreate what nature already provides for free every single day. The Taj Mahal takes its proportions from the symmetry of a flower and the dome of St Peter’s Basilica echoes the curve of a human skull and the Fibonacci sequence that appears in every piece of architecture we consider beautiful was first discovered in the spiral of a pinecone and the petals of a rose and the way a galaxy spirals through space and we call it human genius when we are really just copying what has always been there and trying not to lose too much in the translation. Nature is the original gangster and everything we make is an approximation of what it already built and even our closest approximations like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or a Beethoven symphony or the photographs from the James Webb telescope fall short because they are descriptions of the thing and not the thing itself the same way a map is not the territory.
And then I think about the human mind itself and the things it has produced like general relativity and I wonder how a man who lived a hundred years ago sitting in a patent office in Bern could look at the universe and understand that time bends around mass and that light curves through gravity and that space and time are the same thing woven together and that the whole thing could be expressed in a single equation that fits on a napkin. Nature gave us a universe that runs on mathematics elegant enough that a human brain could reverse engineer a piece of it and that is the most humbling thing of all because it means the universe is understandable and that means nature built a mind capable of understanding itself and no machine has ever done that because no machine has ever wondered about anything. A neural network can predict the next word and generate an image that looks like a photograph and beat any human at Go but it has never once sat in a room and felt the weight of not knowing and then pushed through to a truth that no one had seen before and that is the difference between description and discovery which is the same difference between a blind person describing beauty and someone seeing a sunset for the first time.
So when people tell me that AI will surpass human creativity I wonder what they think creativity is because if creativity is combining existing things in new ways then yes the machine will win at that and it already has in many domains. But if creativity is seeing something that did not exist in the data before and understanding something that has never been understood before and feeling something that cannot be transmitted through language then the machine cannot do that because the machine has never been alive and has never felt the cold of an unexpected winter or the weight of a loss that changes everything or the quiet joy of a morning that feels like a second chance and all of those things are the raw material that human creativity works with. The best among us like Einstein and Ramanujan and Mozart had something that was not just pattern recognition but a kind of vision that came from being deeply inside the world and also somehow outside of it and I do not know if that spark can be generated in silicon no matter how much data we feed it because the spark came from being alive and a machine is not alive and no amount of training data can substitute for the experience of existing.
Tell me about a time nature stopped you in your tracks. I am @troysk704.
