The light on the other side of the beat
I have a pattern that has repeated so many times I have stopped being surprised by it which is that I get stuck in a thought loop about something I cannot fix and I go around and around in my head about a sick family member or the state of the country or a friend going through something hard and the thoughts get heavier and more tangled the longer I sit with them and nothing I do seems to break the loop until I put on hi-tech psytrance and within minutes my brain just resets itself. It is the most counterintuitive thing because the music sounds like chaos to anyone who has not spent time with it and it is fast and loud and repetitive and the beats do not follow any pattern that a normal person would call musical and yet it is the only thing that reliably pulls me out of a spiral because it matches the chaos in my head and then somehow organizes it. The structure of dark psytrance in particular follows a very specific arc where it builds tension and creates fear and takes you to a place that sounds like everything is falling apart and then right at the peak it drops into something that feels like release and the whole thing is a loop that keeps telling you that the darkness is temporary and the tension will break and there is light on the other side if you just ride it out.
I have thought about why this works and I think it is because the music does not try to calm me down and it does not try to convince me that everything is fine and it does not ask me to be grateful or positive or any of the things that people tell you to do when you are stuck in a dark mood. Instead it meets me where I am which is in a state of high arousal and high anxiety and it matches that energy and then it walks me through the darkness at the same pace I am already moving and by the time the track ends the thing that felt overwhelming has been broken down into beats and rhythms and the loop in my head has been replaced by a different kind of loop that has a beginning and a middle and an end. The defragmentation metaphor is the closest I can get to describing it because the music does not add anything new and it does not solve any problems and it just reorganizes the existing noise into something that does not hurt as much and that is usually enough to get me out of bed or out of the house or out of my own head long enough to function again.
I do not know why this particular genre works when nothing else does and I do not know if it works for anyone else the way it works for me and I do not really care because I have tested it enough times to trust it and whenever I feel the loop starting I put my headphones on and let the chaos reorganize itself and by the time the set is done I can think again. It is amazing that something that sounds like noise to most people is the thing that brings me the most clarity and I think there is a lesson in there somewhere about how the right kind of chaos is sometimes the only thing that can fix the chaos in your own head.
Tell me the music that finds you in the dark. I am @troysk704.
