Nobody quotes your tagline
Somebody asked me last week what my personal brand is, and I sat there like a kid caught without homework because I have thirteen years of writing online and never once made a plan for it.
I have never had a headshot taken, and the closest thing I own to a brand is this blog where the failures go up before the wins do, and for a long time I told myself that was laziness about the packaging.
The packaging conversations sold me the visible parts all along, the logo and the colours and the fonts and the pinned thread with the punchiest line, and all of that is expression sitting empty until somebody has actually answered what you believe and what you will not trade away for a better invoice.
You can pay for the voice and the look and the launch thread, and readers still sense the rehearsal the way they smell a copied wedding vow, and I have watched friends come back from fancy studios shiny with nothing behind the shine.
The beliefs need no rarity since a hundred freelancers claim they care about honest work, and the whole difference lands in what happens next, when a client asks for the competitor’s look do you keep quiet for the invoice, and when a flaw surfaces after the deploy does it get written up anyway because the deal is signed and nobody outside the repo will ever know.
I answer those the same way each time since my dharma sits inside the work, and that consistency is what people quote back to me in DMs, and nobody ever quoted my tagline.
The borrowed version is loud around me, and every deck I have opened talks synergy and trust over stock handshakes and Delhi skylines, and I stopped trying to sound like those decks because the man who started on rentacoder charging five dollars for WordPress glue cannot say synergy with a straight face.
Early me looks like a mistake beside now me, where the opinions were safer and the bio more careful, and the brand got better exactly when I stopped performing the grown-up version of myself.
So the start is embarrassingly small and I keep coming back to it, write down what you believe and then open your last ten posts and your last three builds and see whether the two files match, and wherever they differ your audience already knows before you do.
If your bio vanished tonight, who would write your one line? Throw yours at me, I am @troysk704 and I will tell you straight whether I believe it.
